Via Ferrata di Cimalegna is dedicated to the Alagna mountain guide Emilio Detomasi. Built in 2002 by the local mountain guides, this ferrata offers spectacular views onto the Monte Rosa mountain chain. Some sections are fairly athletic and exposed and the ferrata also crosses a Tibetan bridge and walkway.
Getting there
Take the A26 motorway and exit at Romagnano Sesia. Drive up the S.S. 299 to reach the town Alagna at 1191m. Access
From Alagna take the cable car to Pianalonga 2046m and then the chairlift to Bocchetta delle Pisse 2450m. Walk past the bar and continue along the path which leads to the rocky crest and the start of the via ferrata. Make sure to check the opening times of the lift. Itinerary
The first section is certainly more athletic than the rest and the via ferrata begins with a short vertical step which might discourage those less expert and less fit. At circa halfway the ferrata reaches the 30m long Tibetan bridge and then traverses to reach the obvious 20m vertical section which ascends a beautiful pillar. The route now continues past grass ledges and rocky vertical steps to reach the exposed and panoramic ridge which leads to a metal walkway and the final section of the ferrata up rocky slabs. A cairn at 2780m marks the end of the route. Descent
From the cairn at 2780m continue to Rifugio Città di Vigevano 2871m at Col d’Olen and then up to the col Passo dei Salati at 2980m. From here take the cable car down to Pianalonga and the lift back down to Alagna.
Alternatively, at the end of the ferrata descend on foot directly down to Pianalonga and then take the lift to Alagna. Gear
Normal Via Ferrata kit.
