A splendid icefall, physical and unrelenting. Plenty of ice on the upper section, unlike the first lower section, where the little ice that forms tends to deteriorate fairly quickly.
Getting there
From Milan drive to Lecco and then Colico along the SS 36, then continue along the SS 38 to Bormio. From here take the SS 301 towards Livigno and the Foscagno Pass 2291 m.The Forcola pass which connects Valle di Livigno with Valle di Poschiavo is open from May to November only. Access
Park as for Fopel close to the bar Il Fopèl. From here continue up the Val Trenzeira river bed (summer path, signposted), until Tropical and the other parallel running icefalls spring into view on the sunny overhanging rockface on the right. Continue steeply up the valley to the icefall. Take skis or snowshoes (1/1.15 hours). Itinerary
The icefall is characterised by a large, nigh vertical pillar. If conditions are good it should be climbed in two pitches, with a belay behind the detached pillar on the right. Descent
