Sasso Vernale is a beautiful 3000 plus meter peak that dominates the wild Vallone d'Ombrettola and its east face. The descent of this extraordinary slide characterises the entire itinerary and is, in all effects, to be considered demanding. If needed, the itinerary can be divided up into two days.
Access
Reach Malga Ciapela (1384m) from Caprile following signs for Marmolada and Passo Fedaia. Alternatively drive through Val di Fassa and over Passo Fedaia. Drive past the camping ground (1435m), and park the car in the small car park at the end of the road. Itinerary
Follow the road and the cross-country tracks to the sign for Rifugio Falier (2074m). Two paths lead up into Val Ombretta: a steep direct track through the forest, or a less demanding path (No. 612) that first zig-zags up left, then traverses back right over exposed terrain. This is the preferred option in winter. Reach Malga Ombretta (1904m) and continue on past the long level section. Close to Rifugio Falier turn off left up into Vallone d'Ombrettola (2937m). Head up towards the base of Cima Formenton (2937m), to then arch widely right for the slope that leads directly up to Passo Ombrettola. Without reaching the col climb up the face (skis off and crampons on) on its left and then follow the ridge to the panoramic summit (3058m). Descent
Descend directly down the steep and uniform face on the left. After this demanding initial section the angle eases off towards the bottom. From here either continue down right or left; in this case ski down the slopes beneath Cima Ombretta.
Reach the line of ascent, cross the level section and reach the steep drop. Continue along the ascent path through the forest. Notes
The descent down the face is the most exciting part of the itinerary. Check the snow conditions throughout the ascent and carefully choose the line of descent. The level section is long and tiring, but with a clean line of ascent and a fast descent you may not have to push too much.
Note:
1. The itinerary should only be carried out in spring and in stable snow conditions.
2. The itinerary can be divided up into two days by spending the night at Rifugio Falier.

Fantastic and long outing deep into the wild Ombrettola valley. The descent is steep and exposed, not to be underestimated.
