This is a beautiful itinerary that starts from the top station of the Col Gallina chairlift and leads up to the col Forcella dell’Averau. It then returns, towards the magnificent south face of the Tofana di Rozes, down to Rifugio Bai de Dones and the Passo Falzarego road.
Getting there
Take the SS 48 towards Passo Falzarego. Park at the Col Gallina chairlift approx. 16 km from Cortina. Access
Take the chairlift to the top. Itinerary
From the top of the chairlift walk east along path no. 441. Traverse without losing height to a flat karst plateau where, in summer, Lago di Limides forms. This is a beautiful and highly characteristic alpine lake. Continue SE slightly uphill towards Monte Averau past undulating terrain between gullies and rocky outcrops. Reach Forcella Averau at 2390m and then descend north towards Alpe de Potor and the chairlift. Close to the Potor chairlift a power cable leads down to the valley bottom: follow this directly down to the refuge Bai de Dones. Descent
From Rif. Bai de Dones take the bus, free of charge, back to Passo Falzarego and the car park. Gear
Normal equipment for winter walking, snowshoes and poles. Difficulty
Snowpack must be well bonded and stable.
