The Cascata del Fortino, the fort icefall, is one the first to come into condition at the start of the season and is highly popular also thanks to its easy access. After the first 60m section the climb continue via a small stream for circa 200m and to reach a further three pitches, not visible from below.
Getting there
From Udine take the motorway A23 to Tarvisio. From here reach Cave del Predil, circa 1 km after the village follow signs for Sella Nevea. Park the car after circa 1 km on the right, close to a military fort with cannon pointing towards Slovenia. Access
Ascend the stream for circa 100m. Descent
Abseil down the first 60m section by using the abseil chain. The upper section of the icefall is not equipped (Abalakov). Gear
Full ice climbing rack. Notes
The icefall receives the morning sun.
