Memorial Fund for Galen and Barbara Rowell

Memorial Fund has been established for Galen Rowell and Barbara Cushman Rowell through the Tides Foundation.
On 11 August the world famous photographer Galen Rowell and his wife Barbara died in a plane crash outside of Bishop, California. The plane carried four people and there were no survivors. Born in 1940, Rowell was one of Yosemite's main activists during the 1960's and 70's. He subsequently united his passion for the mountains with photography, contributing to magazines such as National Geographic, Sport Illustrated, Outdoor Photography.

Rowell travelled on assignments to Everest, K2 and Gashembrum II, and also made impressive ascents such as the first one-day ascent of Mc Kinley, the first ski descent of Muztagh Ata and the winter traverse of the Karakorum. Rowell published more than 16 books dedicated to photography and his writings were published in “Outdoor Photography”. These were all reproduced in “Galen Rowell vision: the art of adventure photography” and the more recent “Galen Rowell’s inner game of outdoor photography”.

The Rowells dedicated much of their time to Mountain Light, their gallery and stock photography business, as well as philanthropological institutions such as the Tides Foundation. In their memory a fund has been set up and will be used to support the philanthropic interests of the Rowells.
