UIAA cancels last two Ice Climbing World Cups in Russia
As a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, not only did the IFSC suspend the Moscow stage of the Boulder and Speed World Cup, but the UIAA also announced yesterday that it had cancelled the last two stages of the Ice Climbing World Cup, originally scheduled to take place at Tyumen and Kirov in March. Here is the press release of the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme.
25 February – After careful consideration of all factors, the UIAA Executive Board has decided that, in the interest of the safety of all participants and to maintain the integrity of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour, the two remaining UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup events scheduled to take place in Russia between now and the end of the 2021-22 season are cancelled.
In addition, the UIAA Executive Board makes it clear that it condemns in the strongest possible terms any and all use of state or individual violence in pursuit of any aim or for the purpose of the settlement of perceived or actual disputes such as the current Russian actions against Ukraine.
