The first stage of the 2019 Ski Mountaineering World Cup 2019 took place from 18 to 20 January at Bischofshofen in Austria and kicked off in the best possible way. 111 athletes representing 16 different nations inaugurated the season with the Sprint comp, won by expert Italian Robert Antonioli and young Swiss Marianne Fatton. Switzerland’s Iwan Arnold and Spain’s Claudia Galicia Cotrina took silver, ahead of Italy’s Nicolò Ernesto Canclini and Spain’s Marta Garcia Farres who secured bronze.

After Friday’s fatigue and a day off on Saturday, the first Individual race took place on Sunday and was won by Italy’s Michele Boscacci and France’s Axelle Mollaret. Boscacci steered clear of the pack at the first descent and maintained the lead until the finish, stopping the clock after 1:26:14, 24 seconds ahead of teammate Robert Antonioli, while Swiss Werner Marti placed third after clocking in with 1:26:45. Federico Nicolini placed fourth, Nadir Maguet fifth. In the women's competition Mollaret controlled the race from start to finish, needing 1:14:30 to complete the track that had been modified at the last minute due to the abundant snowfall. Claudia Galicia Cotrina from Spain and Marianne Fatton placed second and third respectively, ahead of Alba De Silvestro.

The World Cup continues next week at Font Blanca in Andorra with the Vertical and Individual races.
