The second stage of the Scarpa ISMF Ski Mountaineering World Cup took place in Andorra last weekend and the slopes above the Principality hosted two disciplines, the Individual and the Vertical Race, both dominated by the formidable Spaniard Kilian Jornet Burgada and France’s Laetitia Roux.

In Saturday morning’s Individual competition the Men battled it out over 1844-meter positive height gain spread over five ascents, while the Women and Juniors faced a 1515m total climb. Right from the outset a small group took the lead, comprised of Kilian Jornet Burgada, Robert Antonioli, Xavier Gachet, William Bon Mardion and Damiano Lenzi. Burgada and Antonioli took turns in the lead until the Italian was forced to slow down due to technical problems. Burgada took full aadvantage of this to cross the finishing line after 1:54'30", followed by the France’s Xavier Gachet who took silver ahead of Antonioli. In the women's competition Roux dominated once again, controlling the race right from start to finish, cross the line after 2:23’20 ", ahead of the young Axelle Mollaret and Claudia Galicia Cotrina.

Sunday morning’s Vertical Race was marked by high winds that didn’t however stop Burgada from ascending the 730m vertical height gain course in an astounding 27’27”, 20 seconds faster than Germany’s Anton Palzer. Switzerland’sWerner Marti completed the podium by coming third after 28'05". In the women's competition Laetitia Roux crossed the finishing line first after 33'20", 21 seconds ahead of Victoria Kreuzer, while Axelle Mollaret won bronze medal with a time of 34'07.
