Last weekend Puy Saint Vincent in France held the first leg of Scarpa ISMF Ski Mountaineering World Cup 2015, the international circuit that, after the cancellation of the Greek leg, is comprised of only three other events: Andorra on 24 January and the two stages in Italy, namely Val Martello at the end of February and Prato Nevoso in late March.

The slopes above Puy Saint Vincent hosted the three World Cup disciplines, namely Individual, Vertical and Sprint. Saturday morning kicked off the the Individual race; 1780m of altitude gain and six challenging climbs for the men,1500m altitude gain for the women and Juniors. Right from the start the field was led by Kilian Jornet Burgada, Anton Palzer, William Bon Mardion, Robert Antonioli, Martin Anthamatten and Matteo Eydallin. After a tough battle it seemed as if victory went would go to Burgada, but on the last downhill slope the Spaniard took the wrong route and Germany’s Palzer immediately took advantage of this mistake to win the race in 1:21’26’’, while Xavier Gachet crossed the finishing line less than three seconds later to win silver while William Bon Mardion clocked in with 1:22’04’ to win the bronze.

French ace Laetitia Roux repeated last season’s total domination by winning the women’s competition in 1:28'2 '', almost three minutes faster than her teammate Axelle Mollaret, while Switzerland’s Jennifer Fiechter completed the podium after 1:36'11''.

The Sprint race was held on Sunday, and the technical course made even more difficult due to low clouds that reduced visibility. Victory, after the elimination rounds, went to Italy’s Robert Antonioli, ahead of team-mate Anton Palzer and Josef Rottmoser, while the women's competition was won once again by Roux ahead of Valentine Fabre and Claudia Galicia Cotrina, second and third respectively. The Vertical Race took place this morning and was won by Kilian Jornet Burgada and, yet again, by Laetitia Roux.
