An intense weekend of ski mountaineering has just taken place in Valle Aurina in Italy's South Tyrol as these mountains hosted two different events of the 2013 ski mountaineering World Cup: the Vertical and Individual categories.

The former took place on Saturday and, starting from Riobianco, ascended 640m vertical ascent over 4.9 km to finish at Malga Goge. 145 athletes took part and the first to cross the finishing line, after a mere 31 minutes, was ace Spaniard Kilian Jornet Burgada who preceded France's Mateo Jacquemoud by 7 seconds and the other Frenchman William Bon Mardion by 18 seconds. Fourth and fifth place went to Italy's Lorenzo Holzknecht and Michele Boscacci; it's worth noting that 5 of the top 10 were won by Italian athletes. The women's event was won by a formidable Laetitia Roux who finished in 38:49, followed by Switzerland's Maude Mathys and Italy's Gloriana Pellissier.

Not even 24 hours later all these athletes were poised for the Individual race, the classic competition with 4 technical ascents and descents; 10km, 1635 vertical ascent to finish on the summit of Henne (2472m). After Saturday's "warm-up" it was the French who once again showed their worth with a great double whammy: Matheo Jacquemoud won in 1 hour, 42 minutes and 29 seconds, while teammate William Bon Mardion stopped the clock after 1:42:50. Close behind them was the "usual" Kilian Jornet Burgada in 01:44:11, third. The women's event was dominated by France, too, with an Laetitia Roux proving unbeatable this weekend. She took the lead right from the outset and finished the slightly shorter women's comp in 1:52:50, ahead of Mireia Miro Varela from Spain and the Italian champion Gloriana Pellissier, who took bronze for the second time this weekend.

The next stage of the Ski Mountaineering World Cup 2013 will take place in Les Marécottes-Salvan, Switzerland on 25 January 2013.
