A week ago the Frenchmen Florent Perrier and Gregory Gachet won the fourth and final stage of the Pierra Menta, the challenging international ski mountaineering competition high in the French Alps. Perrier - Gachet started off with a one-minute lead on Sunday and extended this to complete the +10,000m height gain almost seven minutes ahead of second-placed Giacomelli - Lunger and fifteen ahead of third placed Pellicier - Blanc.
The women's event was won, for the second year running, by the Italians Francesca Martinelli and Roberta Pedranzini who dominated the race from the outset on Thursday. They finished 17 minutes ahead of second placed Favre- Bourillon and over an hour ahead of third placed Lathurtaz - Fabre.
