Last weekend the curtain fell onto the Ice Climbing World Cup 2017 after a thrilling fifth and final round came to a close in Corvara in Val Passiria (Dolomites). Once again the competition was dominated by South Korean athletes: in the men’s final on Sunday Hee Yong Park was the only athlete to reach the top of the route, one second before reaching the maximum time limit of 7 minutes and 30 seconds. His third win this season netted him 427 points and his third World Cup after victory in 2011 and 2013. Russia’s Maxim Tomilov placed second in Corvara ahead of his teammate Nikolai Kuzovlev which, in the overall standings, meant that Kuzovlev finished second with 331 points and Tomilov third with 303 points.

In the women's competition both Song and Russia’s Maria Tolokonina reached the top of the final route, but Song’s faster time resulted in victory, 412 World Cup points in total and her first World Cup victory. Her teammate Shin Woonseo placed third in Corvara behind Tolokonina, while after a promising start local athlete Angelika Rainer secured sixth place and, with a total of 297 points, silver in the 2017 World Cup. Tolokonina trailed with 287 to clinch bronze.

In the Speed competition Pavel Batushev stopped the clock on Saturday night after 9.23, ahead of Vladimir Kartashev 9.24 and Egor Trapeznikov, 9.34. With one win and three silver medals this season Kartashev won the Speed World Cup 2017 with 340 points, ahead of Batushev (316 points) and Radomir Proschhenko (239 points). The women's final was dominated by Ekaterina Feoktistova with a record time of 11.65, ahead of Tolokonina (12.48) and Ekaterina Koshcheeva (13.16). This result produced a rather unusual situation: the women’s speed world Cup was won by both Tolokonina and Koshcheeva, joint equal with 305 points, while Feoktistova won bronze overall with her 282 points.

The competition season ends next weekend with the most important event in 2017, namely the World Championship at Champagny-en-Vanoise in France.
