European Ski Mountaineering Championships 2022: Marianna Jagercikova, Oriol Cardona Coll win Sprint
The slopes at Boí Taüll in the Spanish Pyrenees are currently hosting the first European ski mountaineering Championships since 2018 - the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic - and the event got off to a blistering start this morning with the Sprint discipline.
Following the qualification, quarter and semi-final rounds, only the best six athletes got a shot at gold. Marianna Jagercikova of Slovakia won the coveted title by saving her energies for when it counted most, and she "accelerated at the right moment" to claim gold, followed by Tove Alexandersson (SWE) and Emily Harrop (FRA), silver and bronze respectively.
A few minutes earlier local champion Oriol Cardona Coll celebrated victory on his home turf, beating Nicolò Ernesto Canclini of Italy and his Spanish teammate Iñigo Martinez de Albornoz, silver and bronze.
The competitions continue tomorrow morning with the Vertical race at 9:30 am.
