Last year at a training camp in France, professional athlete Sara AlQunaibet fell 13 metres to the ground due to improper belaying. Despite suffering horrendous injuries thankfully she miraculously survived. The Saudi Arabian climber underwent numerous surgeries for her broken feet and spine and is currently on the long and slow road to recovery.

The incident was filmed on camera and the footage, released recently by AlQunaibet on her Instagram account, contains graphic content. One of the most popular YouTube climbing channels, Hard is Easy, has now analysed the turn of events in minute detail. It goes without saying that the accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of correct, attentive belaying at all times, regardless of the belay device used. Climb safe. Belay safe.
