Oriane Bertone climbs Karma, legendary Fred Nicole boulder at Fontainebleau
Karma is one of the most famous boulder problems in the world, a short, compression problem on huge slopers that has come to represent the very essence of bouldering at Fontainebleau. Located at Franchard Cuisinière and first ascended by Fred Nicole in 1995, it was originally graded 8A, then upgraded to 8A+ in 2001 after a hold was chipped by a vandal. Despite this, the bloc has lost none of its charisma and it is without a shadow of doubt "the" line of the French forest.
Taking advantage of absolutely perfect conditions, 16-year-old rising star Oriane Bertone sent the problem the other day in a brace of shakes. In all probability, her repeat is likely to be the first female ascent of this legendary line established by the Swissman 11 years before Bertone was born.
