Martina Cufar and her Midlife crisis 8b
Martina Cufar repeats Midlife crisis 8b at Warmbad, Austria.
In world in which grades, numbers, speed and records seem to count for more and more, some may argue that Martina Cufar's recent 8b ascent of Midlife crisis in Austria's Warmbad is not really news-breaking. Apart from the fact that 8b is and always remains a phenomenal achievement (don't you think?) we simply don't agree with a rule and a rigid scale by which climbing and it's achievements are measured. Superlatives aren't the be all and end all and there is, thankfully, so much more to life in general and climbing in particular than the stark technical difficulties. So what's the story with Midlife crisis? Firstly her email struck us. And secondly we appreciated the simplicity: the name itself gives it away. Martina's motivation was lagging after what she describes as "average competition results" and although the decision to abandon competitions altogether still hasn't been taken, climbing this 35m route definitely got her back on track. This, for us, is the added value that goes way beyond the simple climbing grade.
