Dawn Wall: Adam Ondra on cloud nine on El Capitan

After yesterday’s difficulties and doubts, when Adam Ondra fell off the crux 14th pitch on seven separate occasions, today the Czech climber managed to deal with the pressure and do what he does best: climb superbly. The crux of the Dawn Wall is comprised of three back-to-back pitches graded 9a, 9a and 8c+, and after sending the first 9a, he then sent the second in the dark. What remains is the 8c+, after which the difficulties ease off considerably on the 17 remaining pitches.

The 23-year-old recounted "On cloud nine! It has been magical evening. I was focused and calm. The mindset when climbing is actually fun! Sent the pitch 14 (5.14d) on my first go after a little warm up. Then, after it got dark and having heartbreaking fall on the top of pitch 15 (5.14c or d), I could still give it one more shot and send it too. Skin feels too painful to continue tonight, but I will continue tomorrow!"
