Underground at Massone is certainly one of the most popular 9a’s in the world. This is partly due to the fact that it’s located at Arco where everyone, sooner or later, travels to, and partly due to the fact that this 1998 Manfred Stuffer creation is simply beautiful. Towards the end of March 21-year-old Alexander Feichter from Weißenbach, Ahrntal, managed to add his name to the long list of those who’ve redpointed it. The steep roof is Feichter’s second 9a after The witch of darkness, a line he had bolted and freed at the Drittelsand crag close to Luttach in the Ahrtal in 2013.

Feichter reports his ascent as follows: "The famous Underground at Massone is the best line I’ve ever done. It’s a steep overhang with 3 hard boulder sections and every single one of the 50 moves is just perfect. I prefer really steep routes and when I saw it for the first time I felt pure joy for having found a route that suited my style completely. I immediately tried the moves and managed to do them all on first day. So last year I trained specifically for 3-4 times a week in the evenings and although the route was often wet, on 21.03.2015 conditions were really perfect and I finally sent it. I was so happy, overjoyed. the moment I clipped the anchor is unforgettable, I couldn’t scream or cry, all I could do was hang at the top and enjoy the moment as I begun to realize what I had just achieved."
