Adam Ondra vs Rainman, Britain's hardest sport climb
During a flying visit to the UK last November Adam Ondra spent a day measuring up to Rainman, the first and so far only sport climb in the UK graded 9b. Located in the crucible of British sports climbing, Malham Cove, this testpiece was freed last June by Steve McClure who was understandably curious to find out how hard the route really is and, above all, how great it is to climb for others, too.
Sending 9b in a day is too much even for Ondra who, back in 2010, had set the British cliffs ablaze. Rainman is a notch harder though and he'll certainly return in the future to settle the score not only with this climb, but probably two other grande routes worth focusing on: McClure’s Mutation (1998) and Ben Moon’s Hubble (1990), both situated at Raven Tor.
