The long Monte Consolino outcrop, also referred to as Stilo, was first bolted by a motley group of climbs from Rome, Puglia, etc., including Bruno Vitale and Luigi Filocamo. The first routes were put up by Max Faletti and Riccardo Quaranta and, using the bolts provided by Filocamo, I bolted the sector Grotta, a steep sheet of limestone marked by tufas and pockets considered to be one of the finest of its kind not only in Calabria, but throughout the rest of Southern Italy. The crag faces east and as such receives the sun until 14:00. Since it overhangs considerably you can climb even when it rains, but after extended periods of rain the tufas seep. Fortunately though they dry out quickly!
Access
Take the A3 motorway and exit at Lamezia Terme, take the SS280 for Catanzaro then continue along the SS106 towards Reggio Calabria. At Monasterace follow signs for Stilo.
At Stilo follow the signs to the cemetery, at the cemetery drive up the cobbled street on the right (if this is closed continue on foot) up towards the Norman castle. Park your car at the fifth hairpin bend (on the right), space for 4-5 cars. From here a path leads off, slightly downhill and along the cliff, to sector Grotta in just 5 minutes.
If you walk up from the cemetery you can cut through the woods along the path that leads off circa 150m after the third hairpin bend. The path coasts a stone wall and leads to sector Gaia in 10 minutes. To reach the other sectors continue along the path towards the massive face and then coast along the base of the cliff.
