Beautiful traverse with breathtaking views onto the Alps. Thanks to the cable car this itinerary is all downhill from the Schwarseespitze (2071m) to Gißmann, a small hamlet comprised of little more than 5 houses lost in time. The route's only drawback is the return along the road but, since this remains closed for most of the year, traffic will never be a problem.
Getting there
The Ritten is located at circa 1200m above the city of Bozen (Bolzano) in the South Tyrol, N. Italy. From Bozen take the SP73 towards Klobenstein (Collalbo). To reach Oberbozen (Soprabolzano) turn off left onto the SP134. Access
From Klobenstein drive north towards the Rittnerhorn, park at the cable car station at Pemmern. Itinerary
Take the cable car to the Schwarseespitze (buy a one-way ticket only). Enjoy the 360° view onto the Alps from the Italian Dolomites in the east to deep into Austria in the north, then take panorama path N. 19 which coasts the mountain and leads to the ski lifts and Rifugio Corno di Sotto at 2042m. Leave the "beaten track" and instead of following the crowds up to the summit traverse east along path N. 2a. This leads easily and gently to a small stream, the Lahner Bach, before losing height and, in the shade of a few trees, joins up with path n. 2 and then the hut Gißmannerhütte at 1860m. We recommend a short rest here and a quick sidetrack up to Gissmanner Nock 1924m.
Return back to the hut and then easily descend path N.2, at times slightly steeper all the way down to Gißmann. The final section to Gasthof Roaner is remarkably beautiful and crosses through a larch forest. Take in the beauty of the small hamlet and it's habitat, lost in time, then start the long walk home. Despite being on the road it remains beautiful and interesting all the way to the car park at Pemmern. Gear
