Just before Austria’s Ötztal valley becomes locked in its winter cold, Jakob Schubert from nearby Innsbruck managed to free Kein Licht kein Schatten. The climb is the first 9a in the valley and, consequently, the hardest in the area.
Kein Licht kein Schatten - no light no shade - is located on the upper tier of the Elefantenwand and is reached by first climbing a 7c+. Bolted by local Heiko Wilhelm in 2011, the route is comprised of 15 intense and ultra-steep meters up sharp granite, freed by the 25-year-old Austrian after 4 days of attempts.
